Germinating Cannabis Seeds? How can you do this best?

Before you can start growing cannabis, you first need to germinate the cannabis seeds.

In general, there are four ways to germinate cannabis seeds:

  • Germinating cannabis seeds in a glass of water
  • Germinating your cannabis seeds on a moist surface
  • Germinating cannabis seeds in soil
  • Germinating cannabis seeds in a coffee filter (our recommendation)

It’s good to know that a cannabis seed does not need light to germinate, only a moist environment. Light becomes important for the cannabis seed only when leaves start to appear, as they absorb the light. Until then, it doesn’t matter whether it’s light or dark.

Germinating Cannabis Seeds in a Glass of Water

Ensure an ambient temperature of at least 22 degrees Celsius, otherwise, the seeds will not germinate or will not germinate optimally. Fill the glass with water and place the cannabis seeds in it.

After 1 to 2 days, the cannabis seeds should split open and show the root.

If this happens, you can place these germinated seeds directly into the soil. Insert them about 1 to 7 millimeters into the soil with the root facing downward. The small stem that emerges from the cannabis seed after germination is not the plant, but the root! It’s best to point this small stem downward when planting the germinated seed. This way, the plant will find its way downward more easily. This isn’t a must, but it’s a helpful tip.

If germinating in a glass of water doesn’t work, our advice is to switch to germinating in a coffee filter. This method is the most commonly used in the grow community.

Germinating cannabis seeds on a moist surface

Germinating Cannabis Seeds on a Surface

Germinating cannabis seeds on a moist surface is a simple and popular method for growing cannabis indoors. This method is especially useful for those growing in small spaces, as it requires no additional accessories needed for soil or hydroponic systems. When germinating cannabis seeds on a moist surface, it’s important to keep the temperature stable and at a reasonable level. Too much heat can cause the seeds to dry out and fail to germinate properly.

CAUTION: Not too wet

Additionally, the substrate must be kept constantly moist, but not too wet. Overwatering can cause the roots to rot before they have a chance to grow! Germinating cannabis seeds on a surface also allows you to easily monitor the seeds as they begin to germinate, since you can clearly see when the seeds start sprouting and observe their development.

Once the germination process is complete, the seedlings can be transferred to a larger growing medium or container. Germinating cannabis seeds is an easy and efficient way to start your indoor grow with minimal hassle and without the need for extra equipment. All you need is the right substrate and a bit of patience to get started. Germinating cannabis seeds on a moist surface can be a great way to begin your growing journey, so don’t be afraid to give it a try!

Germinating Cannabis Seeds in a Paper Towel

The moisture in cotton or toilet paper evaporates quite quickly at room temperature. It’s important that the seeds remain moist during the period they still need to germinate.
The moisture that penetrates the seeds activates them and starts the germination process.
You can optionally cover the cannabis seed with a piece of moist toilet paper and place an inverted saucer on top.

Germinating Cannabis Seeds on Moist Paper Towel or Toilet Paper

Place the seeds on top of a piece of moist paper towel or toilet paper and cover them with another sheet. Place an inverted saucer over the top to keep the paper towel or toilet paper moist. Make sure it doesn’t dry out, as this will stop the germination process. Germination can take two to five days for larger seeds and three to five days for smaller ones. When the taproots of the seedlings are about 0.5 cm long, it’s time to plant them in soil or potting mix. Germinating cannabis seeds on a paper towel is an easy way to start your plants without investing in expensive equipment. With this method, you can start your cannabis indoors and grow a healthy garden in no time.

This used to be the most reliable germination method.

This method is reliable and efficient when done correctly. The paper towel should be moist, but not dripping wet. The temperature of the paper towel should also remain relatively stable—avoid placing it in direct sunlight or near a heat source, as this can dry out the seed and make it difficult for the plant to germinate. It’s also important to check the seeds regularly, as some may need extra moisture or ventilation to grow properly. Germinating cannabis seeds with a paper towel can be a fun and exciting way to start your cannabis gardening journey.

Germinating Cannabis Seeds in Soil

is a great way to start growing your own cannabis plants. It’s an easy and affordable method to begin growing and can be done without the use of special equipment or tools. Germinating seeds in soil involves placing the seeds in moist soil, keeping them in a warm environment, and providing enough light for germination. Keep in mind that several factors can come into play, and the best way to germinate cannabis seeds is to first germinate them in a coffee filter and then transfer them to complete the germination process in soil.

The Best Way to Germinate Cannabis Seeds?

Germinating with a Coffee Filter (Our Recommendation)

Place the seeds in water for 24 to 48 hours, then follow the steps described below.

First, take a coffee filter and fold it in half. Place the cannabis seed in the center of the folded filter and moisten it with distilled water. Make sure to leave enough space for the seed to germinate! Then, place the moistened coffee filter in a zip-lock bag and store it in a warm, dark place. The temperature should be between 21 and 27 degrees Celsius.

Once the cannabis seed has germinated, you should transfer it to a soil-filled container with drainage holes and moderate light. Ensure the soil is loose enough for proper moisture saturation. Keep the soil moist but not soggy, as too much water can drown a cannabis seedling.

We recommend the following steps to successfully germinate cannabis seeds: Soak the seeds in water for 24 hours first. Ensure an ambient temperature of at least 20 degrees Celsius, otherwise, the seeds will not germinate or will not germinate optimally. Fill the glass with water and place the cannabis seeds in it.
